Exploring the Impact of Social Networking in the Enterprise

Body:
A few months ago, we announced OfficeTalk, an Office Labs concept test designed to gain insights into the value of microblogging in the enterprise context. Because different companies have different cultures, etiquettes and behaviors, we have been testing OfficeTalk within Microsoft and with a handful of customers to help us better understand the ways in which people and organizations realize value from such tools.

Parallel to our learning process, we continued to refine and expand OfficeTalk’s offering, and looked for ways to extend the core experience and make it more targeted to the enterprise context. This resulted in an updated version of OfficeTalk that includes changes to the user interface and some completely new features. We look forward to testing out the value of the changes we made and how these new features affect OfficeTalk usage for our end users.

INSIGHT: COMPANIES AS CONVERSATIONS

There is a growing belief that making internal communications more transparent increases knowledge availability and collective intelligence. A recent internal survey highlighted that 83% of OfficeTalk's regular users find interesting information they wouldn’t have found otherwise.
Additionally, 72% agreed that OfficeTalk helps them find out what others are working on and reach out to ask questions.

We knew from our research that most users thought of OfficeTalk as useful (63%)

77% of OfficeTalk regular users asserted that OfficeTalk connects them with people they don’t know. Moreover, OfficeTalk helps users connect with people outside of their immediate line of communication: remotely- located colleagues (69%), diverse business units (69%), and different levels of organizational hierarchy (60%). This is important for companies that want to create a work atmosphere that is open, encourages broad knowledge sharing, and breaks down departmental silos.

  OfficeTalk helps to connect users
across locations OfficeTalk helps to connect
users regardless of hierarchy

These insights led to the introduction of changes that enable users to share richer content and to consume it more easily. Over the course of the next few months, the OfficeTalk concept test will focus on two primary areas:

1. More data gathering and observations of end users to refine our understanding of what makes microblogging valuable in the corporate environment; and,

2. Further design explorations and development of functionality specifically targeted at knowledge workers.

Social networking is steadily gaining ground within the corporate environment. We hope our own experiment, along with several other related research projects in Office Labs, enables us to better understand social media technologies in the workplace and apply those findings to the next generation of software experiences.

Introducing OfficeTalk

Body:

No one can deny the growth of social networking in our society. The social media bug has bitten almost everyone and, to match this demand, Microsoft has been offering our customers technologies to harness the power of social networking. Bringing the power of social media right to the workplace is the goal of new experiences such as the Outlook Social Connector, the enhanced blog, wiki, profile, and user ratings planned for SharePoint 2010, or partner microblogging capabilities built on our platform, like NewsGator’s Social Sites for SharePoint.

But what does the future look like? How do we harness this phenomenon in a way that better informs our product development to benefit our customers’ future needs? Office Labs has been researching social networking and the potential for it to positively impact business productivity for quite some time. The last project we mentioned publicly was TownSquare (elements of which are now in SharePoint 2010). Of course not every experiment works – most of those never make it out of our internal testing.

Enter our latest experiment: OfficeTalk. This concept test applies the base capabilities of microblogging to a business environment, enabling employees to post their thoughts, activities, and potentially valuable information to anyone who might be interested. Like any good researcher, we have tested this concept on ourselves first and insights surfaced quickly. In fact, it was one of the most popular internal concept tests to date. Not only was the obvious demonstrated, that people don’t limit microblogging activity to the purely social, but that even an IT managed implementation focused on business productivity can spread quickly across informal networks and create unique collaboration efficiencies and experiences.

It is important to note, like other projects we’ve released from Office Labs, OfficeTalk isn't a product – it’s a research project focused on learning how people might use social networking tools at work and in what ways both people and organizations realize their value. That’s part of our mission at Office Labs, to try new ideas on a small scale to learn about how people embrace them, then extend the concepts based on the data and findings we collect. That’s partly why OfficeTalk today is pretty bare bones – the interesting stuff comes as we learn.

We've learned a lot about what works with social software within Microsoft, but each organization is different, so next we’ll be taking the OfficeTalk concept test, along with other social networking experiments, to a few customers to learn how different businesses and people adopt and use these technologies. Ideally we will learn enough to not only better understand how to apply existing social networking technology at work, but also identify trends and gaps for the next generation of experiences.

<strike>If you are interested in our research and might consider having your firm participate in this concept test, let us know. Since this is a research project, only a very small number of pilots will be considered, but we’d still love to hear from you! </strike>

UPDATE: The OfficeTalk private pilot is no longer accepting nominations.

Forgotten Attachment Detector now supports Arabic, German and Japanese

Body:

It’s been quite a while since we released the Forgotten Attachment Detector (FAD) outlook add-in. We have been closely listening to your feedback and suggestions and have managed to gather significant data as a result. Thank you all for your valuable input!

One of the most requested features for FAD was to support languages other than English. In fact, our data indicated that users already figured out a way of using FAD for other languages by adding keywords specific to those languages in the keyword list. Unfortunately, FAD was not set up to be used this way and resulted in more false positives.

Today I am excited to announce a new release of FAD that supports three additional languages – Arabic, German and Japanese. I have chosen these three languages for the unique and diverse challenges they present in localization, obviating the need to support any additional languages. Along with localization support, this release contains several performance enhancements and a few bug fixes. Get the new version here.

I would like to express my gratitude towards Abhishek Chanda, David Speirs and Outlook team for their invaluable contribution to this release.

FAD also works with Office 2010. If you haven’t explored Office 2010 yet, try it here and explore some of the new capabilities such as conversation view, Outlook Social Connector, and Quick Steps.

Please keep your great feedback coming in our forum and thanks again for trying FAD.

Ribbon Hero Update: Now Works with OneNote!

Body:

Ribbon Hero is a *gasp* game for Office 2007 and Office 2010 (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and now OneNote!) designed to help you boost your Office skills and knowledge. If you feel Office can do a lot more than you have time to figure out, then Ribbon Hero is for you. Play games (aka "challenges"), score points, and compete with your friends while improving your productivity with Office. As a concept test, this is an opportunity for you to try out an idea we are working on and let us know what you think. As with any Labs project, if you have problems we’ll try to help, but no promises!

If you've never used Ribbon Hero before, now is a perfect time to start playing. If you've been using Ribbon Hero, install the update and get rolling! Install it on Windows 7 or Vista! Install it on Windows XP!

There are three major changes in this release, all in response to feedback you've reported to us:

Ribbon Hero for OneNote

This Ribbon Hero update works with OneNote 2007 and 2010 RTM (RTM stands for Release to Market)! That's right, you can now earn a lot more points by using Ribbon Hero in OneNote. OneNote is a great app with lots of exciting features to discover, which makes it a perfect match for Ribbon Hero. Here are just a few of the OneNote features around which we've created challenges in Ribbon Hero:

This version of Ribbon Hero does not work with OneNote 2010 Beta 2. You can download the free OneNote 2007 trial here, the free Office 2010 Professional Plus trial here, or you can wait just a few days until June 15, when Office 2010 will be available to the public!

pptPlex now supports PowerPoint 2010!

Even though we officially stopped working on pptPlex quite a while ago, you've probably noticed that we still play with it in our free time (for example, controlling presentations with a Wii controller and a 3D camera). We noticed that pptPlex wasn't working with PowerPoint 2010, so we took some time to get it working with the latest version of PowerPoint.

Today’s update fixes a few compatibility bugs with PowerPoint 2010, but it also includes an important user experience change with regard to sections.

In PowerPoint 2007, there was no concept of sections, thus pptPlex added the concept. In PowerPoint 2010, there is a concept of sections, thus pptPlex takes advantage of that concept. What this means is that when you’re using pptPlex in PowerPoint 2010, to create, remove, or rename a section, you’ll need to use the PowerPoint user experience, not the pptPlex experience. There will be no “Insert New Section” button in the pptPlex ribbon, and the section divider slides won’t be necessary. Read more about sections in PowerPoint 2010.

Note that the above changes relate to PowerPoint 2010 only. pptPlex in PowerPoint 2007 is not affected.

The second major change in today's update is support for multi-touch in Windows 7. If you are running Windows 7 on a computer that supports multi-touch, pptPlex will support several gestures when presenting, including:

Canvas for OneNote now supports OneNote 2010 and Windows XP

Body:

Today we posted a version of Canvas for OneNote with two changes: The ability to support OneNote 2010 and allow installs on Windows XP.

Are we listening to you?

Ok… so you won’t notice any new features or behavior in this update, but we are listening and really appreciate the comments and feedback we’ve received for Canvas for OneNote.

• Over 70% of people we surveyed said they preferred the canvas view for navigating their large notebooks: cool!
• People also told us that a view like this really needs to be tightly integrated into the application: great to hear!
• People also really wanted to be able to delete pages: what a crazy concept!! (actually, we totally agree and a product would of course ship with such a feature).
• We have some really passionate Windows XP users!!

Well, why aren’t you releasing an update with those changes?

The team originally working on the project was pretty small (think 5), and we actually stopped working on Canvas for OneNote a while ago (though we have been gathering usage data and talking to customers and the Office product teams to share our findings). We’ve been working on exciting new projects that incorporate some of our Canvas for OneNote findings that we hope to share in the future.

Why are you doing this then?

We love technology. A lot. We really like OneNote 2010 (the improved search feature is one of my favorites), plus easy screen clippings, the Linked Notes feature, and the ability to access and take notes anywhere with OneNote Web App and OneNote mobile (available later this year). A few of us made some changes during our spare time to enable OneNote 2010 and XP support, and after some testing, wanted to share the goodness with you all.

So, if you are still running Windows XP we look forward to (finally!) hearing your feedback. If you want to upgrade to Windows 7 with a touch enabled screen, you will be able to experience Canvas for OneNote and other touch enabled programs in a whole new way. If you can, I hope you also give Office 2010 a spin with Canvas for OneNote.

Keep the feedback coming – it only makes us better.

Getting ‘hands-on’ with Microsoft’s vision

Body:

Today the countdown begins…

Alright, that sounds a bit dramatic but nonetheless I am excited. We’ve been working towards some really cool stuff here in Office Labs and today was the first time we showed a glimpse of some of those efforts to an external audience.

About a year ago we released a video dubbed ‘Microsoft 2019’ by the blogosphere. The release of this video represented a start to a conversation… a conversation about technology and people. In developing that work we started with people; we listened hard to their dreams, desires, and sometimes not so subtle demands for how technology might strive to be better. Then, drawing from a portfolio of research projects and software explorations from across Microsoft, we set out to illustrate a plausible (yet aspiring) series of concepts. Ideas for how we might evolve software and technology solutions in the years to come.

We’ve continued to build upon this vision and in keeping with our past work, new scenarios, prototypes and videos will emerge.

But… one of the next big things we are working towards is a different beast altogether. It is a special new installation right here at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, WA.

It is the Envisioning Lab. A place for us to share our vision with our most strategic customers and have a dialogue around what resonates and what doesn’t...

The facility is part of the Microsoft Executive Briefing Center and will provide visitors with a hands-on experience of the technologies and ideas we are working towards.

Here’s a photo that shows a glimpse of the space:

The Lab is now in the final phases of construction, and we’ll open the doors to visiting executives in early April. We think it will be a neat way to share some of the amazing stuff being worked on at Microsoft and more importantly provide a venue to explore farther reaching ideas and get feedback on those concepts earlier in the process. It will be a place that we can experiment, try things out and pull back the covers on where some of the early stage research projects live today.

Stay tuned... more pictures and details to come.

Ribbon Hero update!

Ribbon Hero has been available for a few weeks, and in that time we’ve seen over 32,000 downloads, 25,000 challenges played, over 650 Facebook fans, and lots of general excitement about using games to motivate learning.

We’ve had a few customers with early access to the Office 2010 RC build ask us to release a version of Ribbon Hero that works with Office RC, so we’ve released a new build of Ribbon Hero (build 1.0.0.4) that does exactly that. This new release will work with all Office builds moving forward.

Since the January 19 launch, we’ve been busy listening to feedback from our early adopters and planning our next release. The top issues we’ve heard so far are:

· Ribbon Hero doesn’t recognize all of the ways of completing a task. It’s true that there is often more than one way to complete a task – for example, a function might be accessible through a Ribbon button, keyboard shortcut, dialog box, or right-click menu. In general, we try to reward all of the fastest, or most efficient, ways of completing a task. This means you will often get points for completing a task in a few different ways. But if you’re using less efficient steps to complete a task, Ribbon Hero teaches you a faster way to do it!

Community Clips has Ended!

Body:

Community Clips was a concept test – or experiment – to explore whether it was possible to create a community around how-to videos about Office. When we started this project, we knew that videos could be a great instructional tool, and we believed that Microsoft customers would prefer watching videos to reading help articles. We had a feeling that letting other Office users create the videos themselves would add a layer of warmth and honesty to the community. But we had a lot of questions. Would people want to make instructional videos to show other people how to, say, use Mail Merge or create a Pivot Table? Would people’s videos be accurate, or would they show workarounds that aren’t the best way of doing things? How susceptible would we be to spam and inappropriate content? These questions led us to build a trial community video site, which we called Community Clips.

When we first launched Community Clips, we included a small set of features:

Free video recording tool

Every two to three weeks, we launched an additional feature. Some of these features included:

Video requests, which allowed users to request a video if they couldn’t find one and other users to respond

Avatars, which allowed users to select from any of the following images to accompany their profile

What we learned:

We were surprised to grow such a vibrant community in such a short period of time. Over the course of the project, Community Clips received nearly 900 videos, 310 comments, and 425 ratings. The site received an average of 40,000 visits each month. We saw active discussions (5 comments or more) on a high number of videos, and we saw a high number of videos receive perfect 5-star ratings from more than one user. We even saw the community self-police for offensive or inappropriate content: posting comments discouraging further uploads of that type of video, giving those videos low ratings, and flagging those videos as inappropriate. 11% of our visits each month were from people who had visited the site within the past 30 days, meaning that this portion of our users were regular/repeat visitors. The rest of our visitors each month were new to the site, or had not visited within the past 30 days.

Overall, 74% of users reported being satisfied with the site.

User interviews and surveys produced overall favorable comments, like the following:

I believe this is a great learning and teaching tool

Good work, great idea and nice to be able to watch the content.

I like what I see thus far! I will continue to return see how the community grows and to benefit from and contribute to helping people solve business issues.

Easy to access. Doesn't treat the user condescendingly. Clear, concise demos.

Watching screencasts is often a lot more informative and interesting than reading tutorials.

And with any project, we had our fair share of naysayers, as well, providing comments like:

I think you could improve the sound quality of some of the videos. Also they could be longer with more depth

Well, right now it’s a young site, so a lot of the videos are more on the newbie side. For my personal preferences, I’m looking for things that a little more robust. It has value, but for me personally where I’m at, I’m trying to get some of the pivot tables to work, how to get VBA going. You know it’s young, you’re getting people started in something that’s gonna go along.

The video I saw involved someone showing workaround rather than showing the functions available in Word 2007.

The features that we found to help grow the community most were:

Comments. We saw a high number of comments and a high number of discussions between users in comments. Allowing users to interact with each other contributes to the site feeling like a true community.

Ratings. A high number of users rated videos, and ratings proved to be an effective way for site visitors to find the best videos. Subjectively, we agreed that the highest-rated videos were in fact the best videos on the site.

Email Notifications. We sent notifications to producers when activities happened on their videos (such as comments and ratings), and we sent notifications to commenters when another user commented on the same video after they did. Mails to producers had a 72% clickthrough rate, and mails to commenters had a 79% clickthrough rate. These mails contributed to Community Clips’s stickiness.

The features that were used least, or least effectively were:

Favorites: the feature was used properly but had low overall usage.

Tags: medium-to-high usage. The feature was designed to allow users to provide extra information to improve search results; however, users rarely provided information that improved search results. Most often, they duplicated information that was already contained in a video’s metadata.

Thanks for your interest in Community Clips, and we appreciate your early involvement! Community Clips might find a home in Office Online in the future.

Play Ribbon Hero and hone your Microsoft Office skills

Body:

Hi! I’m Jennifer Michelstein, a Program Manager and casual games enthusiast in Office Labs. My current project is Ribbon Hero, which works on Vista and Windows 7, and in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word 2007 and 2010.

I think that Office has a lot of powerful features that can save users a lot of time and help them do some really cool things. When I meet Office users, I often hear them say things like, “I want to be more productive, but I don’t want to take the time to learn new features.” Then, I’ll watch them do something in 10 steps that could really take just 1 or 2. I love watching people’s reactions when I point out a quicker way of doing things. People often react by saying “Wow! I had no idea I could do that,” and that’s exactly where the Ribbon Hero idea came from.

Games for learning is an increasingly popular field that’s quickly gaining ground. When we started this project, we wondered if there was a place for games in Office. We set out to understand whether elements of game play (things like scoring points, competing with friends, and earning achievements) could motivate people to explore more of the app, learn new features, and ultimately become more productive. Could we do it in a way that fit well into the regular Office workflow, without being too much of a distraction? By playing Ribbon Hero, would people feel like they’d increased their Office skill level?

How does Ribbon Hero work?

There are two ways to earn points. The first is simple – just by using the app. As you start using basic commands, like bold, italic, and underline, you’ll start earning a small number of points. As you use more complex features, like Styles or Style Sets, or combinations of features, you’ll earn even more points. But that’s just the beginning.

There’s a second way to earn points, and that’s by playing challenges. Click on the Ribbon Hero button to see a breakdown of your score (for example, how many points do you earn from Working with Slides versus Getting Artistic?).

Breakdown of Points in PowerPoint

Ribbon Hero watches what features you do and don’t use, and then it recommends challenges for you to play, to hopefully expose you to new features. The first time you complete a challenge, you’ll earn points. But then we want you to use those same features in the app (on another day) to prove you’ve mastered those features! You can max out a feature by using it twice, on two separate days – and only one of those times can you get points from playing the challenge.

Ribbon Hero + Facebook?

Ribbon Hero is the first Office Labs project to dabble with Facebook integration. From the Ribbon Hero dialog box, you can click the “Connect to Facebook” button. Enter your Facebook credentials, and voila! From the Ribbon Hero dialog, you’ll see a leaderboard showing your friends’ scores. Click on any friend to compare your overall score, and your score per challenge. (Hit the skip button a few times, and pay attention to the big blue circle to see who’s winning that challenge.)

After you’ve connected with Facebook, Ribbon Hero will also let you compare your score to the average score of all of your friends, the average score of all Ribbon Hero users, and the average score in your primary network. Better catch up and get ahead of the curve!

When you hit various milestones, Ribbon Hero will ask you if you want to publish those milestones to your newsfeed. This happens every 100 points you earn per app, every time you get a perfect score in one of the categories, and when you get a perfect score overall. There is one limitation of the application for Office 2007 users: you can't get a perfect score, because there are new features on Office 2010 where you can earn more points. To get that perfect score, you can try out the Office 2010 beta, which is available as a free download here.

Working with Microsoft Research

Body:

Here in Office Labs we love to partner with whomever we can in order to do our work. One of our favorite organizations to partner with is Microsoft Research.

In case you’ve never worked with an organization like Microsoft Research, it’s like having a whole building full of world class experts who are happy to meet with you and advise you on your projects. No matter what topic you’re working on, you can usually find someone who’s worked on that topic for several years, and sometimes you find people who have worked on your topic for their entire career!

The benefits of our partnership with Microsoft Research come in many forms. Sometimes you can point to a project and show a clear link to the work of someone in Microsoft Research. For example, our Email Prioritizer prototype is directly based on work from Eric Horvitz.

And sometimes when you watch one of our envisioning videos you’ll see a concept that came from an idea in Microsoft Research. For example, check out the two images below.

The image on the top is from the 1:06 mark of the Productivity Future Vision video, and it shows a woman interacting with a device the size of a business card by touching the back of it—a great way to use your finger to manipulate a small screen without your finger getting in the way of you seeing what you’re manipulating. Cool idea, right? The image on the bottom is Figure 4 from the Microsoft Research paper Back-of-Device Interaction Allows Creating Very Small Touch Devices.

In addition to getting great ideas from Microsoft Research, we also get a lot of value in meetings with researchers where we can quickly get up to speed in a brand new area that we’re working on. For example, we have a few projects that try to help people find the right information, and when we work on those projects, it’s been incredibly helpful to meet with researchers like Susan Dumais, who’s considered a world class expert in the field of information retrieval.

We have several projects underway right now where we’re working with Microsoft Research, and we hope we’ll be able to share those projects with you in the near future!

We have gotten a lot of feedback that you would like to hear more about what is happening behind the scenes of Office Labs.

Over the past months we have been busy at work on additional projects, some of which we hope to share with you in the next several months. In the mean time, we thought you might enjoy this Channel 9 interview with the head of Office Labs, Chris Pratley. Channel 9 is a site that hosts interviews with the people behind creating Microsoft products.

The Office Labs Giving Campaign Auction

Body:

Every year during the month of October Microsoft runs its annual Giving Campaign, where employees worldwide donate to their favourite non-profits. Different teams around the company come up with all sorts of entertaining ways to encourage donations, and I had the pleasure of participating in two of those activities this year:

the Photographers@Microsoft book, where I was on the selection committee and had a photo included (page 37!)

the Office Labs Auction, where I was the auctioneer

The Office Labs Auction is an annual tradition and a total blast. People across Office Labs donate items to the auction, and then we all get together one afternoon to bid. As you can see from some of the photos below I “dressed up” and helped keep things moving along. We had snacks and some drinks, everyone had a lot of fun, and we raised $16,195, a whopping $5,150 more than last year!

Me, encouraging one of the developers on the team to bid high!

The items up for bid were an amusing and eclectic mix of goods and services. Here are some examples:

Homemade baklava (which I’ve eaten in the past and is delicious), donated by one of our Program Managers, sold for $275

Six months of team desserts, donated by two Program Managers, sold for $775

Naming rights to two conference rooms, donated by the whole team, sold for $175 each (I won one of them!)

Five 15-minute neck/back/shoulder massages, donated by our Product Manager, sold for $275

In-home Windows 7 upgrades, donated by our operations manager, sold to four people for $300 each

A day at the racetrack, donated by our General Manager, sold for $1,500

My favourite donation came from one of the developers on the team. He offered to stand in for someone at meetings for an entire day. He even said that if you absolutely, positively, had to attend a meeting, he would go in your place dressed like you and would push your agenda using whatever method you prefer (argumentative, consensus building, demanding, etc.) A whole day free of meetings? Awesome! It sold for a steal, at only $150.

It’s always great when we can have fun at work and raise money for our favourite non-profits at the same time. I can’t wait until next October when we do it all again!

Exciting Times

Body:

It’s exciting times here in Office Labs. We’ve been operating for a little over two years now. We’ve worked on almost 30 projects during that time. Many projects don’t get past the design or prototype phase – we do a lot of concept testing and tuning of ideas to find the ones that work. When they get halfway interesting we put some of them on this web site to get your thoughts as well as data about your usage of them, which helps us further tune the projects.

Office 2010 is just around the corner. While nearly all of our projects were started past the point where they could impact Office 2010, we were able to assist in a couple of areas: social computing features in SharePoint and user-generated video upload for Office Online. I am excited for the 2010 release to get out in broad distribution – it has so much new capability for the here and now – we’re all using it here of course. A quick shout-out to the OneNote team: Go OneNote!

Last year we released a “productivity future vision” concept video called “A Glimpse Ahead…”, also popularly known as the 2019 video, although we’re not really that specific on timeframe. The video is based on work being done in labs and research groups across Microsoft and elsewhere, and while it is not an attempt to predict the actual future, it does try to paint a plausible future that could result if the various technologies and software concepts being developed are commercialized. The funny thing about making videos that showcase futuristic concepts is that when released, many people think they are unrealistic. Then as various products appear in the market that are similar to what’s in the video, the video shifts to being insufficiently visionary – i.e. lame. So we need to keep working on the vision pieces and taking the heat from the doubters. We’re already seeing products appear in the market that offer the location-based augmented reality shown in the airport scene in that video. A few weeks ago at PICNIC in Amsterdam I demonstrated a piece of hardware that leads us to think very large, cheap, even transparent displays are coming in the next few years. Onward…

These days at Office Labs we’re hard at work on seven different projects, many of them directly related to scenes from the 2019 video. You may see some of these and others in the near future. I don’t mean to be cryptic but until these are ready for public consumption I don’t want to give any details. But I can’t resist this one: I look forward to going head to head with some of you in our first effort to merge gaming and productivity…

Have you ever wondered why Office 2007 transitioned away from a traditional menu system? If so, I have a huge treat for you.

Jensen Harris, Office User Experience Manager, told The Story of the Ribbon to the Office Labs team this week. It was awesome edu-tainment - we laughed, we cried and we learned a lot.

Jensen will take you down on a trip of Office memory lane, show some prototypes that didn't make it, and explain how the Office UX you see today came to be. Although the slides are posted, I highly recommend you watch the video - Jensen is a great story teller and adds a lot of value to the slides.

Ideally, the presenter would not need to hold any hardware and natural gestures would be used to navigate the presentation.

I recently learned that Microsoft Research was experimenting with 3D cameras, and I thought it was worth seeing if a 3D camera could be used to control a presentation. Check out this video for the results of my side project.

<iframe src="http://www.microsoft.com/video/en/us/player/embed/14af4271-8bea-4d5a-be9a-04c9c05ca8a1" allowtransparency="true" width="430" height="326" scrolling="no" frameborder="0"></iframe><br/><table width="430"><tr><td align="left"><a href="http://www.microsoft.com/video/en/us/details/14af4271-8bea-4d5a-be9a-04c9c05ca8a1?vp_evt=eref&vp_video=pptPlex+controlled+with+a+3D+camera">pptPlex controlled with a 3D camera</a></td><td align="right"><a href="mms://msvcatalog-2.wmod.llnwd.net/a2249/e1/ft/share7/61a4/0/pptPlex controlled with a 3d Camera.wmv">Watch as WMV</a></td></tr></table>

3D cameras are still in the prototype stage and are hard to come by, and until they become mainstream this was just an experiment. However, it’s interesting to think about what the future may bring.

Touchless - A webcam multi-touch SDK

Body:

Greetings, wise fans of Touchless! I’m Mike Wasserman, creator of this webcam multi-touch SDK. I get a huge kick out of solving coding problems, especially when some relatively simple code can unleash a lot of power from ordinary webcams. Touchless enables multi-touch by using a webcam to track colored objects, which means touch without touching. I’d like to tell my story of working on Touchless and fill you in on the road leading up to this public release.

I’m a work force rookie who joined Microsoft after graduating from Columbia University just over a year ago. By day I code features and tackle bugs for Microsoft Office. But outside of my vital duties to Office, I spend some spare time working on my side project. Touchless is the continuation of one of my undergrad projects at Columbia. The original demo let the user transform simple shapes and draw with two markers. Even after joining the working world Touchless stayed in my mental periphery. I just couldn’t put a stop to my continuing passions for human-computer interaction, augmented reality, and computer vision. Also, despite the growing success and adoption of multi-touch technology (think MS Surface and iPhone), there is still a huge potential to reach a wider base of home users.

Working at Microsoft is great because we get peeks into Microsoft Research projects, and lots of my peers have similar creative outlets and nerdy passions. I rewrote my project using XNA for Microsoft Office Labs’ Productivity Science Fair and demonstrated it for a lot of people, including Andy Wilson (the brilliant mind behind Microsoft Surface). Some laughed at the goofy little marker pellets on my fingers but they still saw value in the project. Office Labs Community Projects soon thereafter expressed interest in helping me release the project as an SDK. I gladly accepted their support and direction (huge props to Gary Caldwell and intern extraordinaire Isabel Mattos) and intensified my own efforts. All that work has already paid off. At the next fair Touchless was voted by attendees as “most interesting project.” You really should have seen how much this little kid enjoyed playing with M&Ms to control the drawing and pong demos. I even caught the attention of Chris Pratley (General Manager of Office Labs) and even Stephen Elop (President of Microsoft Business Division)!

That brings us to today, releasing Touchless to the world outside Microsoft, as a *FREE* *OPEN-SOURCE* SDK with a low barrier to entry for developers and users. Touchless makes developing multi-touch capable software easy, and the results can be enjoyed by anyone with a webcam (and some M&Ms :))! Touchless has come a long way, but its journey has just begun. I can imagine a variety of great directions to explore using Touchless. Perhaps support for the forthcoming Windows multi-touch API, video chat white-boarding, implementing mouse/game/hotkey/media control, and designing decked out Minority Report style file/media browsers.

Now what?
Watch the video

Microsoft Office Labs demo during the CEO Summit Keynote

Body:

Wow… exciting day here at Office Labs. This morning, Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft Corp., delivered his final CEO Summit keynote address titled “The Next Wave of Business Productivity and the Challenge of Continual Innovation” to more than 115 CEOs from around the world. Quick background: The Microsoft CEO Summit is a premier forum that unites the world’s business leaders to discuss and debate the most pressing economic, political, social and technological trends shaping the global business landscape.

You might wonder what this has to do with Office Labs? If you had a chance to see Bill’s keynote, you probably remember the TouchWall / Plex demo. This work is an example of some of the research we are doing as a part of our envisioning effort. We are exploring new technology before people even know they need it, helping to paint a picture of what the future could look like. We are evolving software solutions for people to work better and smarter. It was a thrilling opportunity to share some of our envisioning explorations with the CEO Summit audience here in Redmond and via the web cast with viewers like you from around the world!

So a bit more detail… what are TouchWall and Plex? TouchWall is a research project, developed in conjunction with our friends in Microsoft Research. It is large format display prototype, built to more deeply explore collaborative multi-touch interaction scenarios. Plex is a research prototype from Microsoft Office Labs. It explores an alternative experience for organizing, exploring and presenting content. Like a vertical representation of Microsoft’s Surface technology, it lets the presenter give an infinite tour of materials in a more dynamic format. TechCrunch and CNet have already reported on the TouchWall and Plex in their blog posts.

Over time, you’ll likely see more envisioning explorations on officelabs.com. We know that some of you came across our future health vision video on popular video sharing sites. This video showcases real emerging technology concepts from Microsoft Research and partners. It provides a glimpse of what we believe is a possible scenario in envisioning technologies’ impact on the future of health. Office Labs’ work is based on comprehensive research of global social, economic and industry trends in light of emerging technology shifts and transformations. With close input from customers, partners and subject matter experts from around the world, our team is constantly evolving future productivity explorations. We hope to share more of those explorations with you on officelabs.com. Stay tuned.

A Walk Through the Productivity Future Vision Video

Body:

There has been a lot of buzz around the Microsoft Productivity Future Vision video since it was unveiled by Stephen Elop, President of Microsoft Business Division. Many people have been asking for more information about the scenarios shown in the video, the underlying technologies, and how the video relates to Microsoft’s overall vision and ongoing product development roadmap.

In response to many of these questions, and in an effort to encourage more dialogue around the emerging technology explored in the video, we have created two additional videos. Each is designed to give you a deeper view into the story behind the Productivity Future Vision video and how Microsoft is working toward delivering these kinds of productivity scenarios in the years ahead.

Try InkSeine – Drive the ultimate concept car for pen computing

Body:

InkSeine is Microsoft Research’s concept car for pen-based user interfaces. You can Download InkSeine here.

We’re excited that OfficeLabs has chosen to include InkSeine among the projects highlighted on the site. The ability to have a pen-and-paper experience with a digital device gets a lot of people excited about the Tablet PC. But it’s no secret that a pen is not well suited to graphical interface mainstays, such as pull-down menus, scroll bars, and double-tapping.

What if, we asked ourselves, we could dump the whole legacy of the mouse & keyboard interface and start over with something that’s designed from the ground up to be used with a pen?

Well, it’s no longer an academic question. We did it. InkSeine is our best first shot at an answer. Check out the InkSeine Video to see some of the cool capabilities that it offers.

You can even pick up a stand-alone tablet, such as the Wacom Bamboo, to use InkSeine on your desktop Vista computer.

The tabletscape has been buzzing with excitement about InkSeine as an application that showcases tablet computing. People mention many of the same things that they love about InkSeine over and over again:

· Stroke-based Radial Menus. They’re fast, habit-forming, and just feel right with a pen.

· Great Search Features. Fish for information from your local hard disk, or the web, straight from ink. It makes it fast and easy to get at all your stuff without leaving the comfortable pen-and-ink experience.

· The Tool Ring. This is a semi-transparent round palette that always floats on top of your windows. You can touch down on it and circle to scroll through applications, or tap on the camera to take a snapshot from the screen and import it to your notes.

· A Clean User Interface. InkSeine preserves almost the whole screen for inking. Rather than trying to do everything, InkSeine does a few things really well. It keeps menus and tool buttons to a bare minimum.

For truth in advertising, InkSeine does have its limitations. For example, there’s no scrolling in InkSeine- notebook pages always fit in one screen. If you want to add more information to a page that is full, you just create a new page - like a real paper notebook. Although, with InkSeine, you can lasso-select your handwriting and shrink it down to make more space on the page– try that with your Moleskine notebooks! Send us your feedback about this or any other aspect of InkSeine and let your voice be heard. We’re planning updates and improvements for the next version…

Join the growing community of avant-garde inkers who find that “it is such a joy to use an application where the box was built around the pen rather than making the pen fit the box” (with video review). Take a look at the unique features offered by InkSeine. The online comic-book tutorial shows you how to get started.

Navigate pptPlex using a Wii controller

We’re hoping by now all of you have tried out the pptPlex prototype! I was one of the developers for the pptPlex prototype, and I thought I’d share something cool I tried with pptPlex a few months ago.

It’s common to see presenters give their presentations on stage with a hand-held controller. I have a Nintendo Wii at home and one day I realized that the Wii controller could make a great device for controlling Plex presentations, so I tried it out.

With the Wii controller you can flick your hand to go to the next and previous slide. You can point to the screen and navigate to any slide out of order. If you reach a section and don’t want to go into its details you can use another motion to bypass that whole section.

Take a look at this video I put together to see how it can work. If you like to try this out yourself see this page for instructions on how to set it up. Enjoy!
